This website is an ongoing project to document the butterfly species (plus some interesting moths) that have been found in Starr County, Texas, and vicinity. To help with identification, an attempt is made to include photos showing the variety of forms a single species can take.

A note on names: some butterfly names used here may be considered outdated. In recent years, Nick Grishin and company have used DNA analysis to reclassify many North American butterflies. I have not kept up with their name changes. Perhaps when I have retired from teaching school, and when a consensus is reached on which changes are appropriate, I will have opportunity to make appropriate revisions. In the meantime, be aware that websites such as iNat may use different names for the same species.
